Jeep Wrangler Mechanic for JK & JL Wranglers — We Come to You
Updated October 2026Looking for a Jeep Wrangler mechanic near me who actually knows Wranglers? Heritage 4x4 Outfitters works on JK and JL Wranglers at your home or work on evenings and weekends: death wobble, loose steering, brakes, maintenance, lifts up to 3 inches, armor and lighting, with no trip fee. You talk to Noah, the owner, and Noah does the work.
A Jeep Wrangler Mechanic Who Mostly Works on Wranglers
Most of Noah's work is on Wranglers: TJs, JKs and JLs. That matters, because a Wrangler's solid front axle, track bar and steering wear in their own way, and a general mechanic who sees one Jeep a month tends to replace the most obvious part and hope. Noah has seen the same JK and JL problems enough times to know where to look first.
Every job starts the same way: find what's actually worn, show it to you, and give you a price before anything comes apart.
JK vs JL Wrangler: What's Different for Repairs
The JK and JL look alike, but they're different Jeeps to work on.
JK Wrangler (2007–2018). Early JKs (2007–2011) have the 3.8-liter V6; 2012 and later have the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. Two-door and four-door Unlimited. JKs are now 8 to 19 years old, so most of what we see is wear: steering, suspension, brakes and leaks. We diagnose engine and running problems on JKs at your place.
JL Wrangler (2018–present). Most have the 3.6 Pentastar; others have the 2.0-liter turbo, the 3.0 EcoDiesel, the 4xe plug-in hybrid or the 392 V8. Many JLs have forward collision warning and adaptive cruise, which use a windshield camera and a front radar sensor. The JL's electronics are more complex, so engine and electrical diagnostics on a JL go to a Jeep dealer. Brakes, steering, suspension, maintenance and upgrades we do at your place.
Both: a solid front axle on coil springs, located by control arms and a track bar. The Rubicon adds heavier-duty Dana 44 axles, front and rear lockers, a 4:1 low-range transfer case and a disconnecting front sway bar.

Common Jeep Wrangler JK Problems We Fix in Your Driveway
Death wobble
On a JK, Noah says it's usually missed maintenance: worn track bar bushings, steering joints and ball joints, often on a JK lifted onto bigger tires. The $120 diagnostic finds every worn part, and repairs start at $500. Our death wobble page covers the rest.
Wandering steering
Even a healthy JK can feel vague on the highway, and on bigger tires the factory tie rod and drag link flex. A heavy-duty steering upgrade fixes it. Noah's full front-end steering job, with ball joints, a track bar and Teraflex heavy-duty steering, runs $2,000–$3,000 depending on the parts. Ball joint replacement on its own is covered on our steering and ball joint page.
Oil leaks on the 3.6 Pentastar
Leaks at the oil filter housing and oil cooler are a known issue on 2012-and-later JKs. We find where it's coming from and tell you whether it's a driveway job before quoting.
A ticking 3.8
On 2007–2011 JKs, a tick from the exhaust manifold area is often broken manifold studs or a leaking gasket.
Check engine light
On a JK, we diagnose it at your place for $120 and give you the cause and a price before any repair. Our guide to the Jeep Wrangler check engine light covers the common codes.
Brakes on bigger tires
Bigger, heavier tires make the JK's factory brakes work harder, so they wear faster and the pedal can feel weaker. Brake pads and rotors start at $450, parts and labor; see our mobile brake repair page.

Common Jeep Wrangler JL Problems We Fix in Your Driveway
Death wobble
JLs get it too. On a JL, Noah most often finds worn steering parts and tires that were never rotated; uneven tire wear can set off the wobble on a front end that's close to right. Own a 2018–2020 Wrangler? A class-action settlement approved in June 2023 extended the warranty to up to 8 years or 90,000 miles for repairs tied to a failed front steering damper. Ask a Jeep dealer to check your VIN before you pay for that repair. See our death wobble page.
Steering and suspension wear
Track bar bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints and shocks, especially on JLs with bigger tires or regular trail use. Suspension repair starts at $275; full front-end steering runs $2,000–$3,000.
Brakes
JLs are heavier than JKs, and bigger tires add more. Pads, rotors, calipers and hardware, done in your driveway, from $450 parts and labor.
Maintenance
Oil, filters, and axle and transfer case fluid, especially if you tow or wheel. Routine maintenance starts at $120; see our services page.
Check engine light and electrical
On a JL, engine and electrical diagnostics go to a Jeep dealer, and we'll tell you that up front instead of charging you to guess. On a 4xe, we don't work on the hybrid system.
Wrangler JK and JL Lift Kits up to 3 Inches, Installed at Your Place
Bigger tires are the reason most Wrangler owners lift. We install leveling kits and lifts up to 3 inches in your driveway; labor starts at $200 for a leveling kit and $800 for a lift, kit extra. Our lift kit installation page covers it in detail.
Jeep Wrangler JK lift kit
On a JK, a lift of about 2 to 2.5 inches is the most popular driveway lift, and it's usually enough for 33-inch tires. Most 35s need more lift than 3 inches, which is by arrangement. From about 2.5 inches up, a JK usually needs an adjustable track bar or a relocation bracket to recenter the axle, and its steering parts should be checked first, because a lift on worn steering is a common way into death wobble.
Jeep Wrangler JL lift kit
On a JL, a 2.5 to 3 inch lift is the usual way to fit 35-inch tires, depending on the wheels and trim. JLs also need an adjustable track bar from about 2.5 inches, plus longer sway bar links. If your JL has forward collision warning or adaptive cruise, the camera and radar may need recalibration after the lift, at a Jeep dealer or calibration shop. We'll tell you before the install if yours is likely to.
On both
Bigger tires can make a Wrangler feel slow and hunt for gears; if your tire size calls for a regear, that's by arrangement, so ask us. Every lift needs an alignment afterward at an alignment shop. Lifts over 3 inches and long-arm kits need a shop floor, so they're by arrangement too.
Jeep Wrangler Upgrades and Accessories We Install
Most Wrangler upgrades bolt on, and these are the ones we install in your driveway on JKs and JLs.
Heavy-duty steering. Stronger tie rods, drag links and track bars, including Teraflex steering. The single most useful upgrade on a JK that runs bigger tires.
Bumpers and winches. A front bumper with a winch mount and rated recovery points, and a rear bumper with recovery points, from brands like DV8, Rock Krawler and MetalCloak, with Warn winches. Some JL trims have front parking sensors, a front camera or the adaptive cruise radar in the bumper area, so we check that a new bumper works with yours before you buy. Armor, winch and bumper installs start at $120 labor; see our armor and recovery page.
Rock sliders and skid plates. Protection for the rockers and the belly, the parts that take hits on the trail.
Lighting. LED light bars, A-pillar ditch lights, pods and fog light upgrades, with Baja Designs as our go-to, wired with relays, fuses and their own switches. Lighting installs start at $120 labor; see our off-road lighting page.
You can supply your own parts if they're from an established manufacturer. Our labor carries a lifetime warranty, and parts carry their manufacturer's warranty, whether we supply them or you do. The details are in our terms and conditions.

Wrangler Work That Needs More Than a Driveway
Some Wrangler jobs need a shop floor or special equipment. Bigger jobs are by arrangement, so ask us, and you'll get a straight answer:
- Regears and lockers
- Lifts over 3 inches and long-arm kits
- Axle swaps and axle work
A few things go elsewhere, and we'll tell you up front:
- Engine and electrical diagnostics on a JL go to a Jeep dealer.
- Camera and radar recalibration after a JL lift or bumper goes to a Jeep dealer or calibration shop.
- The 4xe hybrid system goes to a Jeep dealer.
- Alignments go to an alignment shop.
- Automatic transmission repair isn't something we do.
- Tires go to a tire shop; we don't sell or mount them.
Buying a Used JK or JL Wrangler? What to Check First
A few minutes of checking can save you a lot on a used Wrangler:
- Drive it at highway speed. Any shimmy that builds in the wheel above about 55 mph points to worn steering parts or the start of death wobble.
- Feel the steering. Excessive wander or play is worn tie rods, a worn track bar or a tired steering box.
- Know the engine. On a JK, the 2012-and-later 3.6 is the easier engine to live with than the 2007–2011 3.8.
- Look for leaks around the oil filter housing on top of a 3.6.
- Check a lifted JL's safety systems. If it's been lifted, make sure the collision warning and cruise systems work without warning lights.
- Ask for the records. Fluid changes, steering work and whether the lift was installed with the track bar corrected.
Jeep Wrangler JK & JL Questions, Answered
Is there a Jeep Wrangler mechanic near me who comes to the house?
Yes. Heritage 4x4 Outfitters works on JK and JL Wranglers at your home or work across Louisville and Southern Indiana, within about 30 miles, on weekday evenings and weekends. There's no trip fee, and Noah, the owner, does the work.
Why does my Wrangler shake violently at highway speed?
That's death wobble, and on a Wrangler it almost always comes from several worn front-end parts at once: the track bar, tie rods, ball joints or steering box, sometimes set off by uneven tires. The $120 diagnostic finds every worn part before anything gets replaced.
Can you fix my JL's check engine light?
On a JL, engine and electrical diagnostics go to a Jeep dealer, because the electronics are complex and model-specific. On a JK, we diagnose it at your place for $120. Either way, mechanical work like brakes, steering and suspension we do in your driveway.
What size tires can I run with a driveway lift?
With a lift up to 3 inches, a JK usually fits 33-inch tires and many JLs fit 35s, depending on the wheels and trim. Bigger tires generally need a taller lift, which is by arrangement. We match the lift to the tire size you're planning before anything is ordered.
Does lifting my JL affect its safety sensors?
It can. Forward collision warning and adaptive cruise rely on a windshield camera and a front radar aimed for the factory ride height. After a lift or bumper change, they may need recalibration at a Jeep dealer or calibration shop. JKs don't have those systems.
Will a lift void my Wrangler's warranty?
Not automatically. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can't void your whole warranty just because you installed aftermarket parts, but it can deny a claim it shows the part caused. This isn't legal advice; check with your dealer if you're unsure.
Do you work on Gladiators too?
Yes. The Gladiator shares the JL's front end, so most of what's on this page applies. See our Jeep Gladiator page for the truck side.

We work on JK and JL Wranglers at homes and workplaces within about 30 miles of Louisville: Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt, Shelby and Spencer counties in Kentucky, and Clark and Floyd counties in Indiana.
