Why the TJ

Jeep TJ Repair From a Mechanic Who Grew Up on Old Jeeps

Noah's first Jeep was a 1973 CJ-5, and the TJ is the Wrangler that kept that simple, fixable spirit alive: round headlights, a 4.0 inline-six, a manual transfer case lever and no screens to speak of. TJs are a big part of his work, and they're close cousins of the classic CJs he likes best.

They're also now 20 to 29 years old. That means the problems are mostly age: worn steering and suspension, oil leaks, tired cooling systems and, on Kentucky TJs, rust. The good news is that a TJ is simple enough to diagnose and fix right in your driveway, including engine and running problems.

More about Noah is on our about page.

Know Your TJ

Jeep TJ and LJ Basics: Years, Engines, Axles and Transmissions

Knowing what's under your TJ makes every repair conversation easier.

Years: the TJ Wrangler ran from 1997 to 2006. The LJ Wrangler Unlimited, a TJ with a longer wheelbase and more cargo room, ran from 2004 to 2006. The Rubicon was offered from 2003.

Suspension: coil springs at all four corners, with a solid front axle located by control arms and a track bar. The TJ was the first Wrangler with coils, which is why it rides so much better than the leaf-sprung YJ before it.

Engines: most have the 4.0-liter inline-six. Earlier four-cylinder TJs have a 2.5-liter (1997–2002); later ones have a 2.4-liter (2003–2006).

Axles: a Dana 30 up front, and a Dana 35 in the rear on most non-Rubicon TJs. The Rubicon has Dana 44 axles front and rear with lockers and a 4:1 low-range transfer case.

Transmissions: a five-speed manual (the AX15 through 1999, then the NV3550), a six-speed NSG370 in 2005–2006, or a three- or four-speed automatic. We service manual and automatic TJs alike, but we don't repair automatic transmissions.

Electronics: every TJ uses OBD-II, but the systems are simple compared to a modern Jeep, so we diagnose check engine lights at your place.

Common Problems

Common Jeep TJ Problems We Fix in Your Driveway

Death wobble and wandering steering

On a TJ, it's usually age: twenty-plus years of worn track bar bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints and a sloppy steering box, sometimes on a lift that was never set up right. Death wobble repairs start at $500 after a $120 diagnostic; full front-end steering runs $2,000–$3,000 depending on the parts. See our death wobble and steering and ball joint pages, which cover TJ ball joints and steering boxes in detail.

Stalling, then restarting later

On the 4.0, a failing crankshaft position sensor is the classic cause. It often fails when hot and throws no clear warning, so people replace fuel parts first. Our $120 diagnostic finds the real cause.

Check engine light

We diagnose it at your place for $120 and give you the cause and a price before any repair. Our guide to the Jeep Wrangler check engine light covers the common codes.

Oil leaks

The 4.0 finds new places to leak as it ages: the valve cover gasket, the oil filter adapter, the oil pan gasket and the rear main seal. We find where it's actually coming from and tell you whether it's a driveway job before quoting.

Overheating

A decades-old radiator, a tired fan clutch, a water pump or a sticking thermostat. We find which one and replace it at your place. Cooling work and routine maintenance start at $120; see our services page.

Worn suspension

Sagging coil springs, blown shocks and worn control arm bushings make an old TJ clunk, sway and wander. Suspension repair starts at $275.

Brakes

Pads, rotors, calipers and hardened rubber brake hoses, which are worth replacing on any TJ that still has its originals. Brake pads and rotors start at $450, parts and labor; see our mobile brake repair page.

Rust

TJ Rust: What We Check First

Rust is the TJ's biggest weakness, especially on Jeeps that have lived through Kentucky road salt. The usual problem spots are the frame near the rear lower control arm mounts, the frame rails above the rear axle, the body tub's floor pans and the bottom of the tub where it sits on the frame.

We'll put a light on all of it and tell you honestly how bad it is: surface rust you can treat, parts that need replacing soon, or damage that makes the Jeep unsafe. Replacing rusted bolt-on parts, like brake lines, exhaust hangers, skid plates and trim, happens at your place.

Structural frame repair needs a shop floor and welding, so it's by arrangement. Ask us, and you'll get a straight answer on whether yours can be saved and what it would take.

Lift Guide

Lifting a Jeep TJ: What 3 Inches Gets You

Most TJ owners lift for bigger tires and more clearance. We install lifts up to 3 inches in your driveway; labor starts at $800, kit extra. Here's what that usually gets you on a TJ, depending on the wheels and the fender flares:

  • Stock: around 29- to 30-inch tires.
  • About 2 to 3 inches of lift: usually 31- or 32-inch tires, and 33s on some setups with the right wheels and flares.
  • Taller lifts: room for 33s and bigger, but on the common NP231 transfer case, a lift past about 3 inches often calls for a slip yoke eliminator (SYE) and a new rear driveshaft to stop vibration. Those lifts, and long-arm kits, are by arrangement.

On any TJ lift, Noah checks the track bar, the steering and the brake line slack, because a lift on worn steering is a common way into death wobble. Every lift needs an alignment afterward at an alignment shop. Our lift kit installation page covers it in more detail.

Upgrades & Accessories

Jeep TJ and LJ Upgrades and Accessories We Install

Most TJ upgrades bolt on, and these are the ones we install in your driveway.

Heavy-duty steering. Stronger tie rods, drag links and track bars, including Teraflex steering, for a TJ on bigger tires.

Rock sliders and rocker guards. The TJ's rockers and tub corners take hits on the trail; sliders protect them.

Bumpers and winches. A front bumper with a winch mount and rated recovery points, and a rear bumper with recovery points, from brands like DV8, Rock Krawler and MetalCloak, with Warn winches. Armor, winch and bumper installs start at $120 labor; see our armor and recovery page.

Skid plates. Protection for the oil pan, transmission and transfer case.

Lighting. LED light bars, pods, ditch lights and headlight upgrades, with Baja Designs as our go-to, wired with relays, fuses and their own switches. Lighting installs start at $120 labor; see our off-road lighting page.

Fender flares and trim. Replacing worn or broken flares, grilles and trim, which Noah's body shop background makes him particular about. We replace parts; we don't do filler or paint.

You can supply your own parts if they're from an established manufacturer. Our labor carries a lifetime warranty, and parts carry their manufacturer's warranty, whether we supply them or you do. The details are in our terms and conditions.

Cost

What Jeep TJ Repair Costs

Here's how we price work on a TJ or LJ:

  • Labor: $120 an hour.
  • Diagnostic: $120, when there's a problem to find, like a stall, a check engine light or death wobble.
  • Free quotes on flat-rate jobs like brakes, lifts and accessory installs, by phone, from a few photos, or with a quick stop at your house.
  • No trip fee anywhere in our service area.
  • Starting prices: routine maintenance from $120, suspension repair from $275, brakes from $450 (parts and labor), death wobble repairs from $500, steering and ball joints $2,000–$3,000, lifts up to 3 inches from $800 labor, armor from $120 labor, lighting from $120 labor.

Parts come from the same suppliers shops use, usually in 1–3 days, and Noah brings them to the job. TJ parts are easy to find, which keeps waits short.

Where Mobile Stops

TJ Work That Needs More Than a Driveway

Some TJ jobs need a shop floor, a press or a welder. Those are by arrangement, so ask us, and you'll get a straight answer on whether we can take it on:

  • Frame rust repair and frame sections
  • Regears, lockers and rear axle swaps, like replacing a Dana 35
  • Manual transmission and transfer case rebuilds: the AX15, NV3550 and NSG370, and the NP231 and NP241
  • Lifts over 3 inches, long-arm kits and SYE installs

A few things go elsewhere, and we'll tell you up front: alignments go to an alignment shop, we don't repair automatic transmissions, and we don't sell or mount tires.

Buying a TJ?

Buying a Jeep TJ or LJ? What to Check First

Clean TJs and LJs are getting harder to find and holding their value. Before you buy one:

  • Get under it with a light. Check the frame at the rear lower control arm mounts and along the rear rails, and the floor pans inside. Rust there is the most expensive surprise a TJ can hand you.
  • Drive it at highway speed. A shimmy that builds above about 55 mph means worn steering parts or the start of death wobble.
  • Check the engine. The 4.0 is the one most owners want. Look for oil leaks and ask about stalling or overheating.
  • Shift through every gear. Grinding or popping out of gear on a manual means a rebuild may be coming.
  • Engage four-wheel drive in 4-High and 4-Low.
  • On a lifted TJ, vibration at highway speed often means the driveline angles weren't addressed.
FAQ

Jeep TJ Repair Questions, Answered

Do you work on Jeep TJs and LJs?

Yes. TJs and LJs are a big part of our work, from 1997 to 2006, four-cylinder or 4.0, manual or automatic. We come to your home or work on weekday evenings and weekends, with no trip fee.

Why does my TJ stall and then restart after a while?

On a 4.0, the most common cause is a failing crankshaft position sensor, which often acts up when it gets hot. Other causes are possible, so we diagnose it first. The diagnostic is $120.

Can you fix my TJ's frame rust?

We can inspect it and tell you honestly how bad it is, and we replace rusted bolt-on parts at your place. Structural frame repair needs a shop floor and welding, so it's by arrangement. Ask us.

Do you rebuild TJ transmissions and transfer cases?

Rebuilds of the AX15, NV3550, NSG370, NP231 and NP241 need a shop floor, so they're by arrangement, not something we do in a driveway. Ask us about yours. We don't work on automatic transmissions.

What size tires can I run with a driveway lift?

With a lift up to 3 inches, a TJ usually fits 31- or 32-inch tires, and 33s on some setups with the right wheels and flares. Bigger tires generally need a taller lift, which is by arrangement.

Do you work on the LJ Unlimited too?

Yes. The LJ is a TJ with a longer wheelbase, so nearly everything on this page applies to it, from steering and brakes to lifts and armor.
